If these ladies didn’t like me earlier, they really don’t like me now. Apparently Cody’s kindness will cost me… and probably him, too. The Curse Lite strikes again. I wish the bridal party dance would hurry up and get over with so I can leave this reception.

Sloane and the others are whispering among themselves while I reopen my makeup case. One look in the mirror horrifies me. How can Cody look at the disaster that is me with such love in his eyes after all this time and so much pain?

Sloane snaps her fingers from her perch, making me realize I didn’t even notice that she’d moved to her seat. “Please fix any shine and redo my lips.”

The “please” throws me for a second.

“Of course.” I look around for something to drape across her chest so none of the powder accidentally drifts onto the beaded fabric of her bodice, and settle on the T-shirt I’d been wearing when I arrived.

She wrinkles her nose like I’m placing a dirty diaper across her cleavage. “Let’s be quick, okay?”

And there’s our Sloane. Only someone who’s never suffered any real trauma or hardship could lack all empathy and compassion for people like me who are obviously upset. Sometimes I wonder if there is a reason people like me have a target on our backs, while other people—seemingly less deserving ones—get to skate through life like it’s a dream in which everything they want comes true.

“You’re the boss.” I take out some blotting papers and apply them to her forehead, nose, and chin, then brush on a little powder to give her face a freshly finished look.

“I’m sure it’s tempting to try to snag a lawyer like Cody, but don’t be fooled by his nice act. Trust me, you’re out of your league with him,” Tori says from her spot behind me.

I swallow back the truth about Cody and me because it isn’t my place to out his past here and now. After starting on Sloane’s mouth with my lip brush, I reply, “I’m not trying to snag anyone. But if I were, it isn’t any of your business.”

I don’t bother looking at Tori—partly to bug her, and partly so I can concentrate on Sloane’s mouth. Meanwhile, Sloane narrows her eyes at me but can’t speak while I’m painting her lips.

“Well, just to be clear, Cody and I are a thing,” Tori says.

“Good for you.” My heart squeezes, but I don’t believe her. Maybe they had a date, but he does not care for her. That much is obvious to anyone who knows him.

“That’s a stretch, Tor,” Leighton chimes in, though she is not coming to my defense so much as taking a swipe at Tori. “You’re not any tighter with him than I am with Josh. At least I slept with Josh.”

“Giving it all away as usual. No wonder Josh is no longer interested,” Tori snaps.

“At least he was interested at some point. Cody hasn’t even tried to feel you up.” Leighton snickers.

Thank goodness for frenemies! My whole body relaxes after Leighton confirms my suspicions.
